Wedding cakes were once regarded as a fertility blessing and actually thrown at the bride. Nowadays, thankfully for the bride at least, wedding cakes are regarded more traditionally as the bride and groom's first meal together. Hence the cutting of the wedding cake 'moment' and the practice of the happily wedded couple feeding each other the first slice – they're not just starving for fancy chocolate cake!
